Bilzerian and his younger brother Adam previously donated $250,000 to the embattled Republic of Artsakh and the Republic of Armenia — the former being on the receiving end of a brutal assault by Azerbaijan. Turkey and Israel have long supported Azerbaijan by providing it with military aid, which played a pivotal role in crushing the Armenians during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in recent years. Azerbaijan functions as a de facto proxy for Turkey’s Pan-Turkic ambitions in the greater Central Asian geopolitical domain, while also serving as a launchpad for Israeli special operations against neighboring Iran, which itself has a sizable Azeri population that could be used as a potential fifth column.

Hilariously, Bilzerian visited Armenia and Artsakh in late August 2018, which provoked a hostile response from Azerbaijani authorities. At the time, Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s office issued an arrest warrant for the Armenian-American poker champion. He was accused of “illegally” visiting Artsakh, “illegally” obtaining grenades, a gun and other firearms, and using those firearms in a public display for social media. Overall, Bilzerian has every reason to be hostile to both Azerbaijan and its reliable trade/defense partner in Israel.

Further, the social media influencer’s fears for personal safety following the explosive interview highlight the perilous waters navigated by those who dare to critique powerful geopolitical narratives. This chilling effect on free speech is concerning, as it threatens the fundamental democratic principle of open discourse. Bilzerian’s outspoken stance serves as a rallying cry for the importance of preserving these freedoms against overwhelming pressures to conform.
