The Great Replacement Comes to Rural America
How mass migration is reshaping every corner of America.
No matter how far Americans flee from the pressures of urban life, the Great Replacement will always find them.
A Trump administration that engages in largely performative immigration enforcement continues to promise sweeping deportations, yet the demographic transformation of the country continues apace. These gestures have not produced the mass removals that supporters expected, and the underlying trends remain unchanged.
America’s shifting population profile now reaches far beyond the usual metropolitan centers of Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City—all which resemble Towers of Babel unrecognizable to the previous White European settlers who built these illustrious cities. Rural communities once thought immune to these noxious trends now feel the full force of these changes, as the Daily Yonder reported in its examination of population trends in rural America through recent Census data.
Close to 300,000 people have arrived from overseas in non-metropolitan counties since 2020. This influx accounts for most rural population growth during this period, according to the Census. Rural America has grown since the pandemic, yet this follows a decade of contraction that began right after the Great Recession. Research from the University of New Hampshire shows that rural counties lost 289,000 people between 2010 and 2020.
Recent growth in rural communities comes entirely from migration. Domestic relocations and international arrivals together offset the natural decrease in rural counties. A natural decrease occurs when deaths exceed births. Over the past four years, rural regions witnessed six deaths for every five births, creating a deficit of about 104,000 residents.
International arrivals represent 84 percent of national population growth over the past year and 87 percent of rural growth. Demographer Kenneth Johnson of the University of New Hampshire observed that rural America exists in many distinct forms. “There is not just one rural America,” Johnson said. “There’s really several rural Americas, and they’re all different from one another.”
Agriculture dependent counties demonstrate this variation. The Economic Research Service (ERS), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture classifies these regions as places where farming drives the economy. These counties gained 42,600 residents since 2020, including 27,000 immigrants from abroad.
Even here the picture varies by region. Farming counties in the Midwest lost population overall despite receiving about 9,400 immigrants. Johnson noted that “There’s not enough domestic young people who would be willing to do these jobs,” referring to work often filled through visa programs. These industries rely on immigrants to continue functioning, especially as fertility rates fall. Johnson added that “And [in farming counties], immigration did play a fairly significant role in the minimal gain that they received.”
The geographic distribution of new arrivals reflects broader national patterns. Between 2020 and 2024, Texas led with 26,000 immigrants, producing a 2.15 percent increase in its rural population. North Carolina followed with 13,300 arrivals and a 2.23 percent increase. Iowa received 12,500 immigrants yet still experienced a 0.48 percent decline in its rural population.
Other regions show similar developments. Planetizen reported that immigration accounted for 87 percent of rural population growth between 2023 and 2024. Postindustrial found that without international immigrants 58 percent of rural counties would have lost population between 2020 and 2024. By a similar token, Current reported that nearly 300,000 people immigrated from abroad to rural counties during this period.
A study by the National Foundation for American Policy determined that international migration was the only source of rural growth during most of the 2010s. The Great Lakes region demonstrates this starkly. Research from the American Immigration Council discovered that immigrants in rural Great Lakes communities grew by 5.5 percent between 2010 and 2022 while the U.S.-born population fell by 3.1 percent. Without immigrants the entire region would have lost more than 361,000 residents.
The USDA highlighted that rural areas grew by about 134,000 residents between 2023 and 2024. This figure represents a 0.29 percent increase and marks a break from the decade of decline between 2010 and 2020. From 2020 to 2024 rural counties recorded 563,550 more deaths than births. Migration offset this with 974,379 new arrivals consisting of 69 percent domestic migrants and 31 percent international migrants. Per the USDA’s findings, international arrivals accounted for about 48 percent of net migration gains in non-metropolitan counties between 2023 and 2024.
These demographic currents do not stop at the edges of rural counties. They now shape the towns and small cities that once stood apart from the forces transforming major metropolitan areas. Springfield, Ohio is case in point. The city entered the national spotlight during the 2024 presidential election cycle when the influx of Haitian migration to the city caused major economic and social dislocations. Springfield, which recorded about 60,000 residents according to the 2020 Census, received an estimated 12,000 to 20,000 Haitians in recent years.
The city acknowledged this change on its official website. “The City of Springfield has experienced a surge in our population over the last several years, primarily due to an influx of legal immigrants choosing Springfield, Ohio as their new home.” Mayor Rob Rue told CNN link that the city grew by about 25 percent in the last three years.
Most of these arrivals entered through Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or humanitarian parole. The American Immigration Council noted that this program allows nationals of designated countries to live and work legally in the United States when their homelands face dangerous conditions. The city confirmed the flexibility of this program “Once a person with Temporary Protected Status enters the country, they are free to locate wherever they choose.” Springfield’s affordability and available jobs was a major draw for immigrants. The city also detailed that word of mouth in immigrant communities encouraged this migration.
The Biden administration’s further expansion of humanitarian parole programs in January 2023 accelerated this trend. Customs and Border Protection reported that these programs brought 210,000 Haitians into the country. Haiti first received Temporary Protected Status in 2010 after the devastating earthquake, as ABC News reported.
Springfield entered this moment with a far different past. A once prosperous manufacturing center in the Midwest that anchored the region for generations, the city fell into deep decline as its industrial base collapsed during the latter half of the 20th century. For perspective, by 1880, the Whiteley company produced more farm machinery than all Chicago factories combined, and the East Street plant ranked among the largest industrial laboratories in the world, according to OSU Extension. The city peaked at more than 82,000 residents in the 1960 Census link before decades of decline. Springfield lost about one quarter of its population between 1970 and 2020.
Economic decline accompanied this population loss. The Springfield News Sun documented that manufacturing employment fell from 13,000 workers in 2000 to 6,700 by 2015. Median household income dropped by 27 percent between 1999 and 2014, the steepest decline of any metropolitan region in the country.
The city pursued revitalization beginning around 2008. However, instead of trying to reconstitute itself with local, American talent, the city began importing foreigners to try to jumpstart its economy. The American Immigration Council claimed that Springfield revived its business climate but lacked enough workers which created a familiar narrative that promotes more migration. Haitian migrants began to arrive to fill this perceived labor shortage around 2013 and 2014.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine defended this approach. He stated in an ABC News interview: “Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really made a great resurgence with a lot of companies coming in... What the companies tell us is that [the recent Haitian arrivals] are very good workers. They’re very happy to have them there, and frankly, that’s helped the economy.”
The arrival of 12,000 to 20,000 Haitians since 2018 now represents at least 20 percent and possibly 33 percent of Springfield’s 2020 population. Despite Republican dominance at the state level, Springfield’s demographic transformation occurred with little resistance. Ohio has maintained a Republican trifecta in state government for 21 of the last 25 years. Republicans have held supermajorities in the State Senate and State House since 2013. This level of control gives Republicans near total authority, yet they have done little to halt or reverse demographic change in Springfield or anywhere else in the state.
A similar pattern emerges at the national level during periods of Republican rule. The current Republican trifecta in Washington mirrors the one that held power during Trump’s first term from 2017-2019. Both periods produced dramatic statements on immigration but no substantive reversal of the country’s demographic trajectory.
This reality now defines life in the United States. The Republican Party operates as the right flank of a political order that supports mass migration. That order governs every major institution in the country. It shapes corporate policy, academic research, media narratives, and nearly every level of government. No matter the destination—from Dallas to New York from Miami to Los Angeles from rural counties to small towns like Springfield—the Great Replacement moves forward.
Only a fundamental change in the ruling class could end this civilization-destroying process. Until that moment arrives, Americans will find that no place remains out of reach from the transformations set in motion by Washington’s mass migration regime.

In fact boomers reaching retiring age is adding to the employment crisis even quicker.
Mass immigration allows the country as a whole, and businesses in particular, to avoid investment in robotisation, which is the only short- medium-term fix for the economic impact of the oncoing demographic winter.
Capitalism is as short-termist as democracy!
All these events seem too well coordinated not to have been a long range plan. .. If we did not send all our manufacturing overseas and .. If we did not allow Multi-National Corporations to take over our farming… there would have been jobs to be had and people would have had more children because they could afford them and most people would have stayed in thier home town where they know and love thier neighbors and have deep roots. This would be natural and aligned with our culture. To wait decades to prop up a few businesses to say they need illegal immigrants to work some cheap labor jobs also sounds like some cheap votes.
Republican’s are great at loosing. Many State Republicans are not at all interested in America 1st Policies. I would not blame this at all on Trump, I would blame it on RINOS (Republicans In Name Only), who are actually kicking America Firster’s out of the local county Republican parties nation wide. There is soooo much dirty money to be had that I would guess 80% of them are on the take from some Investment builder, big AG technocrat, lobbiest, PAC, whatever. They are Not going with Trump’s agenda but using the hell out of his name and photo. In Florida, we have a hurricane. For four hours we have over 4 feet of water in the houses. It drains and leaves 3 inches of mudd. There is no help except from illegal aliens who have flooded in. It’s like they came in with the tide. All the people you’d normally call are either working on thier house or making a million working on big dollar projects on the beach. Your warned not to work with these people but there is no one else. Your only choice is to walk away from your property with the purely little bit your insurance gave for everything you ever owned. Many more details but … when you go to this town now, every grocer and retail has foreigners working in all customer facing positions. This is all since the hurricane, but everyone is polite and no one says anything. All roofing in Florida is done by foreigners but that seems to have been going on for quite sometime. Yes, I totally agree with you that it does not look like we are deporting these people. It looks like a well laid plan for replacement.
