My oversimplification is that Spain's import of South American gold shifted the balance of power as African gold was nolonger king and shifted some aspects of lending and borrowing. How Spains resources from South America between 1525 and 1571 influenced Mediterranean intrigues is a peripheral subject but something I wonder about.
